On the one hand this movie has excellent acting, dialogue, and story. On the other hand it badly tries to be a 90s action thriller, with a bad script, and horrible editing.
For example, there is a lot of detail in the movie but the dialogue sometimes references events that are not clear as if the viewer would pick it up quickly. Another example is in one of the final scenes when the lead detective finds the empty house and realizes Clarice was in danger - but how could he have known. She merely stumbled upon the killer following up on an old lead in a cold-ish case, so I don't understand the reason for all the drama and that quick zoon in shot was horrible.
I think the novel is probably much better than the movie - the latter appears to have been hastily made. I do not understand why it got Oscars for best Movie and certainly does not deserve the best Adapted Screenplay. The acting was superb on both Foster and Hopkins' sides, with great delivery of the dialogue.
I taped this movie on the VCR and watched it a few times decades ago when I was a teen. Now re-watching it after more than 25 years - I am a bit critical.

@Carobug5 its a decent movie and enjoyable but it way to far fetched a times, overall i would say it is an over-the-top story that reeks of phoniness, grisly violence and exploitation, just my opinion. I actually sneaked in to watch it 1.) because I was too young for an R rated movie and 2.) because I wanted to see a movie for free. I had no idea at the time that I was watching what would be considered a classic film.
At that time the entire movie was new and fresh: this genius of a madman named Hannibal Lechter, this young FBI agent in training named Clarice Starling and this absolute freak making clothes out of women's skin dubbed Buffalo Bill. I was enthralled with these characters and the story. I was in disbelief at the gruesome nature of it yet the intelligence of it. After watching it again today, fully, for the first time I have an even greater appreciation for it.

1st watched 7/28/2000 - 8 out of 10 (Dir-Jonathon Demme) Excellent thriller with tremendous acting throughout. Every character is portrayed well with Hopkins & Foster leading the way. Demme scares you without the typical jump out of your seat moments. The story itself keeps you on the edge of your seat. Haha!
